For information on specific requirements, please view Author Guidelines. We attract a large number of international submissions each year which make major contributions across the range of psychology, particularly where the work has the following characteristics: articles or groups of articles dealing with topics which are of interest to researchers from more than one specialism; section of psychology or which address topics or issues at the interface between different specialisms or sections of psychology; articles or groups of articles which take different or contrasting methodological or theoretical approaches to a single topic; articles or groups of articles dealing with novel areas, theories or methodologies; integrative reviews, particularly where the review offers new analysis (e.g. meta-analysis), new theory or new implications for practice; articles or groups of articles dealing with the history of psychology; interdisciplinary work, where the contribution from, or to, psychological theory or practice is clear. It enjoys a wide international readership and features reports of empirical studies, critical reviews of the literature and theoretical contributions which aim to further our understanding of psychology. Most situations devised by psychologists, on the other hand, examine either reaction to signals without memory, or memory without reaction. A task has been devised in which both functions are involved. It consists of sets of random numbers which are observed through a small slot allowing only a few numbers at a time to be visible. The subject has to cross out particular digits, and has to remember which digit he is seeking at any particular instant. This type of task is compared with a more conventional number crossing task in which the subject has to find all instances of one particular digit, and both types of task are performed with and without an additional auditory distraction. In the present experiment, conducted with groups of young and of old subjects, it was found that the tasks involving memory are very vulnerable to distraction. The older subjects differed greatly among themselves, some being seriously inferior in performance to younger subjects; no such difference in variance appears in the similar task without memory load. When a distracting task is presented together with a main task involving memory, older subjects do very badly at one or the other, whereas young subjects do reasonably at both.
EFFECTS OF A SUBSIDIARY TASK ON PERFORMANCE INVOLVING IMMEDIATE MEMORY BY YOUNGER AND OLDER MEN
13873205
10.1111/j.2044-8295.1962.tb00825.x",[123],"https://bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.2044-8295.1962.tb00825.x",[208,228
"a84a882b-307a-4d39-a249-0aafd88597e1",1,[],[213
"b791c534-852c-41d9-8c79-5003d4b77746
"6b8b8dc6-f787-4898-822d-fdfddaafd099","2024-11-27T22:35:29.721+00:00",[],"Occupational-Aspects-of-Ageing-Research-Unit-Medical-Research-Council-Liverpool
Occupational Aspects of Ageing Research Unit, Medical Research Council, Liverpool
"A5057617350
Alastair Heron
"4056dea4-725f-47bc-89b6-caaac294c708",[],[232
"a9cad628-67f4-49b4-89fb-7763c90e9b1e
"4c606056-18a3-4372-aac7-ecfecca3a838","2024-10-10T01:18:21.638+00:00","2024-11-27T22:35:29.716+00:00",[],"Applied-Psychology-Research-Unit-Medical-Research-Council-Cambridge
Applied Psychology Research Unit, Medical Research Council, Cambridge
"A5078196550
https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7251-8402
D. Building on this finding and on the postulate from the dual‐process theory that analytical thinking is essential in order to make good judgements and decisions, we hypothesized that social exclusion will alter judgement and choice behaviour. We tested this hypothesis in three experiments in which social exclusion was manipulated using the Cyberball paradigm, an online ball‐tossing game in which participants either received the ball a fair number of times or were excluded by the other two players. We focused on a range of tasks designed to be sensitive to participants’ ability to engage in analytical thinking and careful deliberation, including the cognitive reflection test (Experiment 1) and a set of anchoring, intertemporal preference, disjunction, and confidence tasks (experiments 2 and 3). Our results unanimously failed to support the hypothesis that social exclusion influences people's judgements and decision‐making. We discuss the implications of our findings for social exclusion theory.
Decision‐makers are resilient in the face of social Play rate, heart rate, winnings, subjective excitement and expectations of winning were recorded for five male and five female high‐frequency players. Autoregressive regression analysis indicated that wins affect play rate for up to three minutes, while effects of the other variables were inconsistent. Markov chain analysis confirmed that wins smaller than 50 credits tend to elevate play rate, while larger wins cause a breakdown in the otherwise very regular rate of play. The format of the description inquires whether reading performance in each syndrome is (1) sensitive to dimensions of words (such as word length or part of speech), (2) affected by experimental manipulations (such as exposure duration), and (3) relevant to theoretical issues (such as the nature of codes for word recognition in reading). The four patterns of reading impairment seem to relate in an orderly way to these dimensions, manipulations and issues drawn from the literature on normal word recognition and production. This hypothesis was supported in the original evaluation of the ICSEY project data, using the mean adaptation scores for individuals in the four acculturation clusters. This conclusion was further supported by an analysis that used scores that were derived from the two underlying dimensions. This paper further evaluates this hypothesis meta‐analytically using two new methods: Cultural Involvement and Cultural Preference; and Euclidean Distance. The results showed that these two methods provided support for the integration hypothesis, for both psychological adaptation and socio‐cultural adaptation. The pattern of relationships was stronger for positive than for negative indicators of adaptation. Forty subjects were tested under two conditions. In one condition they listened to an 80‐min. recording of a sequence of digits in order to detect the occurrence of primary signals defined as three successive odd digits which are all different. In another condition they listened for primary signals as described above, but in addition they also had to detect secondary signals defined as the occurrence of the digit68. The primary signals occurred ten times every 16 min.; there were about ten times as many secondary signals (digit 6) as there were primary signals (odd‐odd‐odd).
The over‐all detection of primary signals was better when subjects were listening for both primary and secondary signals than when they listened for primary signals alone. Extraverts benefited more by the secondary task than introverts. No significant relationship was found between either neuroticism or intelligence and vigilance performance.
