Responses to all questions tend to be positively correlated, and the whole questionnaire correlates with other recent measures of self‐reported deficit in memory, absent‐mindedness, or slips of action. The questionnaire is however only weakly correlated with indices of social desirability set or of neuroticism. It is significantly correlated with ratings of the respondent by his or her spouse, and accordingly does have some external significance rather than purely private opinion of the self. The score is reasonably stable over long periods, to about the same extent as traditional measures of trait rather than state. Furthermore, it has not thus far been found to change in persons exposed to life‐stresses. However, it does frequently correlate with the number of current psychiatric symptoms reported by the same person on the MHQ; and in one study it has been found that CFQ predicts subsequent MHQ in persons who work at a stressful job in the interval. It does not do so in those who work in a less stressful environment. The most plausible view is that cognitive failure makes a person vulnerable to showing bad effects of stress, rather than itself resulting from stress.
The Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) and its correlates
7126941
10.1111/j.2044-8260.1982.tb01421.x","PUBLICATION","VERIFIED","Auto Verify",[132],"EN","https://bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.2044-8260.1982.tb01421.x",[135,154,171,187
"69fe70b1-5401-4289-ad1b-40355458341f",[],[139
"f7782a40-be42-4f96-99bb-07a65110f54b
[
U Oxford, England",[
"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7251-8402
D. In contrast, parental warmth was negatively correlated with these forms of self‐criticism. In addition, when things go wrong for the person, recall of parental warmth was associated with the ability to be self‐reassuring. A mediator analysis suggested that (1) the impact of recall of negative parenting on depression is mediated through the forms of self‐criticism and (2) the effect of parental warmth on depression was mediated by the ability to be self‐reassuring.
Conclusions. The impacts of negative parenting styles may translate into vulnerabilities to depression via the way children (and later adults) develop their self‐to‐self relating (e.g. as self‐critical versus self‐reassuring). However, there has been little work on the different forms and functions of these self‐experiences. This study developed two self‐report scales to measure forms and functions of self‐criticism and self‐reassurance and explore their relationship to depression.
Methods: A self‐report scale measuring forms of self‐criticism and self‐reassuring, and a scale measuring possible functions of self‐criticism, together with a measure of depression and another self‐criticism scale (LOSC), were given to 246 female students.
Results: Self‐criticizing vs. self‐reassuring separated into two components. Forms of self‐criticizing separated into two components related to: being self‐critical, dwelling on mistakes and sense of inadequacy; and a second component of wanting to hurt the self and feeling self‐disgust/hate. The reasons/functions for self‐criticism separated into two components. One was related to desires to try to self‐improve (called self‐improving/correction), and the other to take revenge on, harm or hurt the self for failures (called self‐harming/persecuting). Mediation analysis suggested that wanting to harm the self may be particularly pathogenic and is positively mediated by the effects of hating the self and negatively mediated by being able to self‐reassure and focus on one's positives.
Conclusions: Self‐criticism is not a single process but has different forms, functions, and underpinning emotions. Competing models of the latent structure of the DASS were derived from theoretical and empirical sources and evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis. Correlational analysis was used to determine the influence of demographic variables on DASS scores. biases were assessed with a probe detection task in anxious (N = 17), depressed (N = 17) and normal control (N = 15) subjects. Word pairs were presented visually, with a dot probe following one word of each pair. Allocation of attention to the spatial position of the words was determined from response latencies to the probes. Half the word pairs were presented supraliminally, half subliminally. The anxious and depressed groups showed an attentional bias towards supraliminal negative words, in comparison with normal controls. The depressed group unexpectedly showed greater vigilance for supraliminal anxiety‐relevant words than the anxious group. The anxious group shifted their attention towards the spatial location of negative words presented subliminally. study tested the ability of the Warrington Recognition Memory Test (1984) to discriminate between patients with left and right temporal lobe lesions. Forty‐seven patients who had undergone unilateral temporal lobectomy (TL) (23 right‐ and 24 left‐sided operations) were tested on the two components of the test, recognition memory for words (RMW) and recognition memory for faces (RMF). The results show that the right TL group were significantly worse than the left TL group on RMF. Conversely, the left TL group were significantly worse on the RMW test, confirming earlier results relating to material‐specific deficits in long‐term memory following TL. The RMF test was relatively sensitive and specific in detecting significant impairments associated with right TL, but the RMW proved much less sensitive to the effects of left TL.
