The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of UHRCT to visualize laryngeal structure and kinetics. Three normal volunteers and three patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) were incorporated in this case series. First, images were taken under five conditions in normal volunteers. Five tasks consisted of (1) air inspiration through the nose (IN), (2) breath holding (BH), (3) sustained vowel \u002Fi:\u002F phonation (IP), (4) humming phonation (HP), and (5) forced glottic closure during exhalation (FC). Three-dimensional CT images of arytenoid and cricoid cartilages, as well as virtual laryngoscopic images, were reconstructed using UHRCT data. Reconstructed images were compared among five conditions to assess the best tasks to picture laryngeal kinetics. Second, pre- and post-phonosurgical images were examined in UVFP patients to evaluate potential role of UHRCT to assess laryngeal pathology in hoarse patients. Among the five conditions, IN and IP conditions were considered suitable to visualize laryngeal structure at rest and during phonation, respectively. Kinetic abnormalities including asymmetric motion of arytenoid cartilages were elucidated in UVFP patients, and virtual endoscopy visualized the clinically invisible posterior three-dimensional glottic chinks. Furthermore, UHRCT was useful to understand changes in laryngeal structure achieved by phonosurgery. UHRCT is an emerging imaging technology that can be used for minimally invasive visualization and assessment of laryngeal structure and kinetics. We herein constructed a multiple regression model for hearing outcomes in each frequency separately in an attempt to achieve practical prediction in ISSNHL. We enrolled 235 consecutive in-patients with ISSNHL who were treated in our department from 2015 to 2020 (average hearing level at 250–4000 Hz ≥ 40 dB; time from onset to treatment ≤ 14 days; 126 males\u002F109 females; age range 17–87 years (average 61.0 years)). All patients received systemic prednisolone administration combined with intratympanic dexamethasone injection. The pure-tone hearing threshold of 125–8000 Hz was measured at every octave before (HLpre) and after (HLpost) treatment. A multiple regression model was constructed for HLpost (dependent variable) using five explanatory variables (age, days from onset to treatment, presence of vertigo, HLpre, and hearing level of the contralateral ear). The multiple correlation coefficient increased as the frequency increased. Strong correlations were seen in high frequencies, with multiple correlation coefficients of 0.784\u002F0.830 for 4000\u002F8000 Hz. The width of the 70% prediction interval was narrower for 4000\u002F8000 Hz (± 18.2\u002F16.3 dB) than for low to mid-frequencies. Among the five explanatory variables, HLpre showed the largest partial correlation coefficient for any frequency. The partial correlation coefficient for HLpre increased as the frequency increased, which may partially explain the high multiple correlation coefficients for high frequencies. Three-hundred and seventeen head and neck cancer patients referred to intensive nutrition support during radiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. Patients who missed less than 25% of their appointments with the dietitian were considered adherent. Primary outcome was percentage weight loss during treatment. Secondary outcomes were overall survival and patients' capacity to accomplish their caloric and protein recommendations. Logistic regression was used to examine predictors of weight loss and Kaplan–Meier to estimate survival. Less than half of the patients (n = 145, 45.7%) were adherent. Statistically significant less weight loss in the adherent group (42.8% vs 55.8%; p = 0.02) was found, despite no difference in energy or protein intake. Logistic regression models after adjusting for other variables demonstrated that adherence resulted in 43% protection from significant weight loss (odds ratio 0.57, 95% CI 0.34–0.97). Overall survival was not different between groups. Findings demonstrated that patients who were adherent to weekly contacts with the dietitian had less weight loss, but not better survival or nutritional intake.
